Houston’s shopping is as varied as its food. You’ve got one of the biggest malls in the country, a luxury district that rivals any in Texas, charming walkable strips full of local boutiques, outlet centers for the deal hunters, and international markets that are an experience in themselves. Here’s the lay of the land, grouped by the kind of trip you’re making — so you can match where you go to what you actually need.
The Galleria
If someone says “the mall” in Houston, this is usually what they mean. The Galleria, in Uptown, is the largest shopping center in Texas — over 400 stores and more than 30 million visitors a year. It spans the full range, from everyday department stores to luxury flagships like Chanel, Louis Vuitton, and Tiffany & Co. The signature feature is Ice at the Galleria, a year-round indoor ice-skating rink right in the center of the mall — a genuinely fun stop with kids, and a nice break from a Houston summer.
Luxury: River Oaks District
For high-end shopping in a different setting, River Oaks District (near Upper Kirby/River Oaks) is an open-air luxury center that opened in 2015. It’s home to designer flagships like Hermès, Dior, Cartier, and Van Cleef & Arpels, plus a boutique movie theater and good restaurants. Even if it’s a window-shopping trip, it’s a pleasant place to walk.
Walkable local districts
This is where Houston gets charming. Rice Village, next to Rice University, is the city’s most established walkable district — more than 300 shops and restaurants across a browsable 16-block area, a mix of national names and small boutiques. Over in the Heights, historic 19th Street is the eclectic, locally owned counterpart: vintage clothing, antiques, vinyl, home goods, and indie shops, with newer mixed-use centers like Heights Mercantile and MKT adding restaurants and more retail nearby.
Outlets and deals
When you’re hunting for a bargain, head out of the core:
- Houston Premium Outlets — in Cypress, off US-290 northwest of the city. An open-air center with around 145 designer and name-brand outlet stores.
- Katy Mills — off I-10 west in Katy. A fully indoor outlet mall with 1.3 million square feet, including Neiman Marcus Last Call and a huge Bass Pro Shop — weather is never an issue.
International markets
One of the real perks of Houston: the markets. Along and around Bellaire Boulevard in Asiatown, you’ll find some of the best international grocery shopping in the country. 99 Ranch Market is the largest pan-Asian grocer in the city, with full butcher and seafood counters. H Mart is the Korean-focused go-to (the banchan and prepared-food sections are the draw). And Hong Kong City Mall on Bellaire is a destination in itself — a big Asian-centric shopping center with a huge market, plus shops and restaurants. Even if you’re not cooking, they’re worth a wander.
